<ul class="summary-list"><li>I spent my <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/gifts/40th-birthday-gift-ideas">40th birthday</a> in Ghana with nine of my closest friends — we spent about $35,000 total.</li><li>We stayed at a five-star hotel in Accra and saw sites in the Cape Coast and the Volta Region.</li></ul>I've traveled to over 30 countries all over the world, so I knew I wanted to take an epic trip for my <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/aaron-paul-40th-birthday-celebration-dominican-republic-resort-photos-2019-9">40th birthday</a>.It was important for me to feel rooted in and connected to my heritage as I entered a new decade, so I chose to visit Ghana in West Africa with nine of my closest friends.I've spent considerable amounts of time in southern and eastern Africa but only visited Ghana once in 2017. My time there left a considerable impact on me, so I wanted to celebrate my milestone birthday there with friends.Between the vaccinations, flight, hotel, planned activities, food, and drinks, we each paid about $3,500 for the trip. It was money well spent.Ghana offered a unique blend of adventure, relaxation, and cultural immersion, making it the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spend-birthday-traveling-alone-love-solo-travel-2023-7">perfect place to celebrate my birthday</a>.Here's what our experience was like.<h2 id="cc8f6006-415d-43f7-8d3f-dfca948cf400">We researched Ghana's entry requirements ahead of time</h2>It's always worth checking the latest entry requirements and health advisories before traveling to Ghana.When we visited, we needed a valid passport and a visa. It was easy to request a visa on the <a target="_blank" href="https://ghanaembassydc.org/visa/">Embassy of Ghana's website</a>. Most of us received our passports from the Ghana Embassy in Washington, DC, in about two weeks.We also made sure to get <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/travel-insurance">travel insurance</a> and any necessary vaccinations.<h2 id="98b5f5e5-52e9-44c7-96a0-3a96473fae08">We stayed in Accra and organized the trip with the help of a Ghana-based tour company</h2><div type="image" title="Author Ashlee Tuck and her friends posing for photo in Ghana" height="900" width="1200" msid="112576303" hostid="261" sizebytes="114360"></div>Since we only had about five full days to spend in Ghana, we worked with <a target="_blank" href="https://awunitoursghana.com/">Awuni Tours Ghana</a> to curate an itinerary based on our interests.The guides made sure we didn't have to worry about a single aspect of our trip. They knew the ins and outs of the city and provided our transportation to each activity, too. I highly recommend working with them or another local Ghana-based tour company, but be sure to read reviews first.<h2 id="94380134-759f-4c3d-80d4-05d86b5a4f8e">We visited many sites in Accra, Cape Coast, and the Volta Region</h2>We stayed at the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.kempinski.com/en/hotel-gold-coast-city">Kempinski Hotel</a> in Ghana's capital, Accra, for a week. It's centrally located and is one of few five-star hotels in Accra.When we weren't on our daily excursions, the Kempinski's pool and spa were the perfect respite. Getting the hotel breakfast, which we could add on to our stay, was also a great way to start each day.While in Accra, we visited iconic landmarks such as Independence Square, Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, Makola Market, and the W.E.B. DuBois Centre. We also enjoyed the city's vibrant nightlife.On a different day, we drove three hours to the Cape Coast region and visited the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://slaveryandremembrance.org/articles/article/?id=A0103">Cape Coast Castle</a>.This was once a trading post from which thousands of enslaved Africans set off for their forced journey across the Atlantic Ocean. There, we were able to go through the "Door of No Return," which they would've passed through to be led onto ships. It was a moving experience that's not to be missed.We also received traditional Ghanaian names from a local tribal chief who welcomed us "home" as descendants of Africa.While in the Volta Region, we took a 30-minute boat ride at the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theroyalsenchi.com/">Royal Senchi Resort</a> and then had the most delicious lunch at the hotel restaurant. It was about two hours away from Accra, but worth the drive to see another region in Ghana.<h2 id="11ab5073-e18e-49d7-8274-16d4f2ba1d1a">We ate and drank well throughout the trip</h2><div type="image" title="Author Ashlee Tuck and her friends at dinner" height="773" width="1031" msid="112576302" hostid="261" sizebytes="104572"></div>We tried to strike the perfect balance between trying new Ghanaian dishes and enjoying other <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/comfort-food-around-the-world-2018-3">foods from around the world</a>.We ate traditional dishes such as jollof rice (a dish made with tomatoes, chiles, and spices), banku (fermented dough balls), and kelewele (spicy fried plantains). We even took a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/cozymeal-cooking-class-review">cooking class</a> with a local chef to learn how to make traditional dishes.For lunch, we went to local eateries like Chez Clarisse and Buka. For dinner, we stopped at several more upscale restaurants, like Shogun and Bella Afrik. <h2 id="8a2896fb-6703-4038-9421-8d624c2ca461">This was the best way for me to spend my 40th birthday</h2>Celebrating my 40th in Ghana was not just about the destination; it was about creating lasting memories filled with adventure, culture, and relaxation.With its welcoming people, rich history, and stunning landscapes, Ghana offered an unforgettable experience that made my milestone birthday truly special.

Billions have been spent pushing voters to back specific candidates and causes.Vice President Kamala Harris upended the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kamala-harris-donald-trump-swing-state-polls-photo-finish-2024-11">presidential race</a> with her late entry. Pre-election polling showed her race against former President Donald Trump could be the closest in history. The margins are so tight that a potential polling error could result in an unexpected blowout.More than 78 million Americans have already voted early, either in person or by mail. Final turnout may dip slightly from the historic mark set in 2020, but a pre-election Gallup poll showed voter <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/democrats-republicans-voter-enthusiasm-swing-state-polls-2024-10">enthusiasm above 2008 levels.</a>It's not just control of the White House. Congress is up for grabs, too. Republicans are favored to retake the Senate, thanks to key races occurring on favorable turf. The House is tougher to project. Republicans could net a few seats, or Democrats could flip the chamber with an equally narrow majority. Just like in 2018, New York and California, hardly competitive in the presidential race, loom large.Here's what we're watching.<h2 id="dbd2c6b7-9d67-4564-b035-dd49e1633343">How Trump or Harris will win the White House</h2>Harris' easiest path to victory remains what was once President Biden's last resort: holding Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Nebraska's 2nd Congressional District — the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/harris-trump-blue-wall-economic-message-unions-michigan-pennsylvania-wisconsin-2024-10">so-called "Blue Wall" </a>and the "Blue Dot." Barring any unexpected upsets, Harris would then win the Electoral College 270 to 268.Trump's easiest route to victory also goes through Pennsylvania, the most important swing state. Winning Pennsylvania would likely allow Trump to retake the White House by holding North Carolina and flipping back Georgia. In that scenario, he could even sustain the blow of losing an Electoral College vote in Nebraska, which pre-election polling shows is very likely.While so much focus is deservedly on Pennsylvania, Trump spent significant time in the race's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-harris-campaign-schedule-final-days-election-north-carolina-pennsylvania-2024-11">final days in North Carolina</a>, even though only two Democrats, Presidents Obama and Carter, have won the Tar Heel state since 1976.<h2 id="33a8541d-7186-485c-9f39-513897c661cf">These are the bellwether counties to watch.</h2>Bucks County, Pennsylvania: Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro recently called this Philadelphia metro-area county, "the swingiest of all swing counties in the swingiest of all swing states." Hillary Clinton won Bucks by less than 3,000 votes in 2016 and lost both the state and the White House. President Biden won it by just over 17,000 votes four years ago en route to taking his native turf by a roughly 80,000 vote margin. If Trump wants to retake Pennsylvania, doing well here is key.Waukesha County, Wisconsin: Once traditional GOP ground, this Milwaukee-suburban county area has moved closer to Democrats-like suburbs nationwide in the Trump era. Trump routed Clinton here in 2016, but his margin decreased by just over 7 points four years later, as he lost the state by a roughly 21,000-vote margin to Biden.Maricopa County, Arizona: In 2020, the home to Phoenix, the fastest-growing county in the nation, swung to Democrats by just over 2 points. President Biden went on to win the state by just roughly 10,000 votes. In contrast, then-Gov. Doug Ducey, a popular Republican, won the county by almost 14 points two yeas prior.<h2 id="563abb9a-9c88-4a29-ab86-330b0cf1d83b">Here's what early exit polls could tell us:</h2>Exit polls will provide the first major at who turned out to vote early in the evening after the embargo lifts at 5 pm Eastern Time, though specific data on who may win a state is held back until polls close in that area.Though exit polls can offer valuable data, especially about demographics, they are often misleading and are not predictive of an eventual winner.Mark Blumenthal, a contractor at YouGov and previous head of election polling at SurveyMonkey, told Business Insider he will interested in how the vote ends up breaking down by gender and race, particularly given the speculation that Democrats are losing ground among Black and Latino voters.Overall, though, he cautions against making too much of exit polls on election night itself. "As a means of trying to see who is going to win, between the time when they start being released, which is usually 5 pm Eastern tomorrow, and when we get a final count, my advice is to ignore them," Blumenthal said. "Utterly, completely ignore them. Go for a walk. Go take a yoga class, watch something on Netflix, because they're not designed to tell us who's going to be the winner of the presidential election."<h2 id="db285587-345b-4cbd-b4cf-b803271c2358">Republicans are favored to retake control of the Senate.</h2>Michigan: Rep. Elissa Slotkin is trying to hang onto this open senate seat that her fellow Democrats have held for 20 years. Former Congressman Mike Rogers, once a Trump critic, hopes the former president will push him over the top. Rogers and his allies have zeroed in on Slotkin's support for the White House's fuel efficiency standards that do not mandate electric vehicle production but would likely result in the auto industry producing more EVs. Pre-election polling: Slotin was up by roughly 3 points, per RealClearPolitics' averageOhio: Sen. Sherrod Brown, a Democrat, has managed to survive past challenges in the former swing state that now tilts toward Republicans. His challenger, Cleveland Businessman Bernie Moreno, has hammered Brown over immigration. According to AdImpact, the Ohio Senate race is the most expensive non-presidential race ever. Pre-election polling: Moreno was up by less than 1 point, per RealClearPolitics' average.Montana: Sen. Jon Tester, a Democrat, is facing an even tougher challenge in Montana, a state Trump carried by over 16 points in 2020. Republicans worked hard to elevate <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tim-sheehy-montana-senate-gunshot-wound-questions-tester-2024-11">Tim Sheehy</a>, a wealthy aerospace executive, even though expectations of a bruising primary did not come to pass. Like other Republican hopefuls, Sheehy has done everything possible to tie Harris to Tester. Pre-election polling: Sheehy was up by 6.5 points, per RealClearPolitics' average.<h2 id="55c3c49d-49e9-4d7b-b097-24845da6f374">The House is much closer.</h2>Arizona 1st District: Rep. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/david-schweikert-profile-trump-realignment-arizona-economic-interests-abortion-2024-10">David Schweikert</a>, a Republican, has represented Scottsdale and its surrounding areas in Congress for almost 14 years. Gov. Katie Hobbs and Sen. Mark Kelly easily won the area, one of the most educated districts still held by a Republican. His challenger, former state Rep. Amish Shah, has highlighted his centrist record and is hoping Trump's unpopularity will sink Schweikert.New York 19th: Rep. Marc Molinaro was one of four Republicans who flipped a Democratic-held seat during the 2018 midterms in New York, a margin that proved vital to the GOP retaking the chamber. Democrats are hoping Josh Riley, a lawyer and policy analyst, can win in a rematch two years later with the help of Harris at the top of the ticket. More than $35 million has been spent on the race, making it the most expensive House contest in the nation.California 22nd: Rep. David Valadao is one of 18 House Republicans representing a district President Biden won in 2020. Valadao is also one of the only two remaining House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump after the January 6 Capitol riot. Former state Rep. Rudy Salas is like many Democrats in key races, hoping to win in a rematch after falling short two years ago.

What to watch for on Election Day as Harris and Trump face off

<ul class="summary-list"><li>SpaceX is gearing up for Starship's fifth flight test on Sunday.</li><li>The test follows a successful fourth attempt, with both the booster and upper stage landing in the ocean.</li></ul>SpaceX is preparing for another flight test of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-starship-flight-four-ocean-splashdown-elon-musk-plans-2024-6">Starship</a>, the world's most powerful rocket that Elon Musk hopes will one day take humans to Mars.The spacecraft's fifth flight test is set to take place on Sunday at around 8 a.m. ET. A livestream will begin around 35 minutes before launch and will be available to watch <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://x.com/i/broadcasts/1RDGlyognOgJL">on X</a> or on the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.spacex.com/launches/mission/?missionId=starship-flight-5">SpaceX website</a>. Hence, five years ago, August 7 was proclaimed <keyword id="22677698" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Handloom-Day" source="keywords">National Handloom Day</keyword> in response to this crisis and to heighten public awareness. This date holds special historical significance, commemorating the initiation of the Swadeshi Movement in 1905—a pivotal act of defiance against British colonial rule. <h2>When did this industry come into existence?</h2>According to archaeological findings, the origins of handloom in the Indian subcontinent may be traced back to the Indus Valley Civilization. The Mughal Empire was known to support and patronise <keyword id="20258864" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="weavers" source="keywords">weavers</keyword>. The support from the royal patrons resulted in the invention of new textiles such as ‘Mulmul’ and ‘Banarasi Brocade’ among others. This era witnessed a heightened worldwide demand for Indian textiles. In the 17th century, India produced 25% of the world’s textiles, with Bengal accounting for more than 50% of textiles and 80% of silks imported by the Dutch from Asia. <h2>What led to the decline of the <keyword id="19934660" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-handloom" source="keywords">Indian handloom</keyword>?</h2>The East India Company's entry fuelled the industry's initial decline, which started in the 1830s. The weavers were obliged to sell only to the British, and that too at exceedingly cheap prices, virtually putting them out of business. On the other hand, Indian cloth was taxed excessively to promote machine-made British clothing. The Industrial Revolution in Britain strengthened their indigenous textile industry, giving rise to new markets for cheaper textiles. In India, the collapse of the Mughal aristocracies meant no access to royal patronage. As a result, textiles like Khadi and muslin had little demand in the market. Circling back to the present, the industry is facing both similar and new challenges. Fabrics made on power looms are cheaper and faster to produce, in comparison to handloom fabrics. The industry is largely unorganised, and the wages are shockingly low. 67% of <keyword id="22706216" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="handloom-workers" source="keywords">handloom workers</keyword> are earning less than the minimum wage every month. Faced with economic challenges, the older artisans are thus forced to encourage the newer generation to choose an alternative career path. This migration of the workforce from a traditional sector is evident from the fall in the number of weavers less than 35 years of age- from 26.13 lakh in 2009-10 to 16.07 lakh in 2019-20. The majority of weavers do not have access to banking facilities, let alone institutional credit. Furthermore, if one manages to accumulate credit, there is a mismatch between the supply and demand forces due to the lack of awareness about handwoven textiles in the current generation. <h2>Initiatives for revival</h2>The cultural significance of the Indian handloom isn’t just limited to its beauty and extravagance, but it extends to our independence struggle as well. The Swadeshi movement immortalised the charkha and advocated for the use of indigenous goods. Following independence, the Indian government took many measures to revive the handloom industry. In 1953, India’s Parliament approved the Khadi and Other Handloom Industries Development Act. In 1955, the All India Handloom Fabrics Marketing Cooperative Society was formed to promote the sale of fabrics produced by handloom cooperatives across India. The National Handloom Development Programme (NHDP) aimed to provide financial assistance for marketing and production. The Handloom Weavers’ Comprehensive Welfare Scheme offers health and life insurance to weavers, to ensure social security. The organisation commenced a fortnight-long exhibition, “VIRAASAT” dedicated to celebrating the 10th National Handloom Day began at Handloom Haat in Janpath, New Delhi on Saturday, 3rd August 2024, and will conclude on 16th August 2024. The Handloom Mark scheme was introduced to authenticate handloom products, thus enabling weavers to gain better market access and ensuring that consumers get genuine products. Moreover, the India Trade Portal also mentions that the GOI plans to provide financial assistance of Rs. 30 crore to at least 10,000 handlooms. Various state governments also regularly conduct handloom expos and fairs, providing platforms for weavers to showcase and sell their products directly to consumers. <h2>Contemporary Brands and their love for Indian handloom</h2>Modern, popular designers such as <keyword id="8264" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sabyasachi" source="Orion">Sabyasachi</keyword> and <keyword id="21493890" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ritu-kumar" source="keywords">Ritu Kumar</keyword> are known to work closely with weavers and have been doing their part by bringing worldwide attention to the handloom industries. Recently, <keyword id="1472101" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ajrakh" source="Orion">Ajrakh</keyword> was brought into the limelight when Alia Bhatt wore a custom Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla Ajrakh saree to Joy Awards in Riyadh. However, it’s not just the fashion moguls who are working towards the revival of this industry. Contemporary indie brands are partnering with local weavers, and creating awareness about their work. The emergence of such indie brands and their association with local artisans is beneficial for both entities. For instance, Joskai Studio derives its name from ‘Joskai’, a woven piece of cloth worn as a part of the traditional costume of the Tiwa community of Assam. They work with artisans in northeast India, specifically from the weaving village of Saualkuchi in Assam. Rouka by Sreejith Jeevan is a Kerala-based brand that works strictly with weavers from Kerala, specifically Chendamangalam and Kuthampally. <h2>Employment and Exports</h2>According to the Indian Trade Portal, the Indian handloom sector is the country’s second-largest employer after agriculture in rural areas. The Handloom Census 2019-20 mentions that the industry employs about 35,22,512 workers across the country, with women forming 77.29% of the workforce. India is the second largest exporter of handloom products in the world, with exports valued at $ 353.9 million in 2017- 18, as per EXIM bank's working papers. The major handloom export centres are Karur, Panipat, Varanasi and Kannur where handloom products like bed linen, table linen, toilet linen, floor coverings, and embroidered textile materials and curtains etc. are produced for export markets. During April 2021-February 2022, India exported handloom products worth 1693 crore, as per Indian Trade Portal. Indian silk scarves also form a sizable chunk of total handloom exports, in addition to home textiles like carpets, rugs and mats, which constitute over 13.6% of India’s total handloom exports. <h2>The Path Forward</h2>The mere existence of organisations and allocation of funds isn’t enough to sustain the legacy of India’s rich handloom industry. Big corporations working with local weavers ensure employment but don't protect them from exploitation and meagre wages, leaving them vulnerable. The people in power ought to come up with strategies that ensure the trickle-down effect of the schemes and funds. The new generation of buyers has a greater purchasing power than the one before them. Marketing focused on bringing Indian handloom practices into the limelight can do wonders in this case.

This gap in attendance in schools only grows with age. The enrollment of girls in primary school is satisfactory, largely due to the availability of primary schools and the introduction of schemes like the midday meal. However, distance remains a huge barrier in the hinterlands, pushing them further away from attending secondary school. In 2006, the Nitish Kumar-led state government, launched the Mukhyamantri Balika Cycle Yojana, a pioneering cash-for-kind program to empower girls through education. Their research found that this bicycle program increased age-appropriate secondary school enrolment for girls aged 14-15 by 32%. It also reduced the gender gap in enrolment by 40%. Moreover, the number of girls appearing for and passing the 10th-grade exam rose by 18% and 12%, respectively. The success of this initiative highlighted the transformative power of providing a bicycle. Inspired by the Bihar program's success, Professor Prakash later collaborated with <a href="https://worldbicyclerelief.org">World Bicycle Relief (WBR)</a> and Zambia's Ministry of General Education to implement a similar initiative in the Southern province of Zambia. <h2>After Bihar, why Zambia?</h2>Zambia is a landlocked country in Southern Africa that has made significant strides in improving access to primary education with near-universal primary school enrolment. However, the story, when it comes to girls in secondary education, is markedly different. The drop-off for girls, as they transition to secondary education is stark. According to the World Bank’s 2015 report ‘Policy Brief: Zambia,’ their enrolment fell to just 61% at the lower secondary level. The same report states that girls drop out of school at double the rate of boys in Grade 7 and triple the rate of boys by Grade 11. <h2>A tough road to secondary school</h2>Transitioning to, and completing secondary education is particularly challenging for girls, primarily due to barriers like school fees, long distances to school, and societal factors such as teenage pregnancy and child marriage. These challenges are even more pronounced in rural areas. Additionally, this transition to secondary school often coincides with the onset of menstruation, which brings its own set of challenges. The lack of menstrual hygiene facilities in schools, coupled with the stigma and lack of awareness surrounding menstruation, further exacerbates the already significant gap in girls' education. Nearly 98% of girls in their sample reported walking to school, spending an average of 110 minutes commuting just one way, as reported in a <a href="https://www.cesifo.org/en/publications/2022/working-paper/wheels-change-transforming-girls-lives-bicycles">new study</a> authored by Professor Nishith Prakash and his collaborators. Alarmingly, 35% of these girls reported experiencing sexual harassment during their commute, highlighting just how perilous a journey many face in their pursuit of education. This <a href="https://www.cesifo.org/en/publications/2022/working-paper/wheels-change-transforming-girls-lives-bicycles">intervention</a> was introduced in Zambia, providing bicycles to girls in 100 schools across three districts, and the results were promising. Overall absenteeism dropped by 29%, translating to an additional five school days per year for girls in the Southern Province, where the average primary school student missed 18 days annually. Girls in the schools who received the bicycles were 38% less likely to drop out of school compared to those in the schools who did not receive the bicycles. <h2>Pedalling towards a safer commute</h2>The impact of these bicycles extended beyond just improved attendance. The program also led to enhanced perceptions of safety among the girls. One year after the intervention, girls in the treatment group reported a 22% reduction in instances of being teased or harassed on their way to school. Additionally, the probability of girls missing school or leaving early due to safety concerns dropped by 39%. Post the success of this program, the United States Agency For International Development (USAID) awarded $3.5 million to fund bicycles for growth initiatives to increase access in rural communities in Sub-Saharan Africa, mainly Ghana, Malawi, Rwanda, Uganda, and Zambia. Additionally, the Ministry of General Education (Zambia) scaled up the cycle program in several districts in Zambia. Simply put, the bicycles in Bihar and Zambia gave young girls the agency of making choices for themselves. While the immediate benefit of these programs was providing the means for women to travel to school, the long-term impact reveals significant shifts in attitudes among both the women involved and the communities around them! But did you know that the use of bicycles to provide women with this much-needed agency isn’t new and was actively instituted by women during the suffrage movement of the 19th century — a decades-long fight to win the right to vote for women in the United States? <h2>Corsets to cycles: The Suffrage movement &amp; bicycles</h2> <div type="image" title="A woman with a bicycle in early 1900s" msid="113057788" hostid="261"></div> In the late 19th century, during the American industrial revolution, a seemingly simple invention sparked a movement that would forever change women's lives — the bicycle. As the country experienced a ‘bicycle craze,’ the first wave of the women’s rights movement was gaining momentum. The bicycle quickly became more than just a mode of transportation; it became a powerful symbol of change and progress in the fight for women’s emancipation. In fact, the introduction of the bicycle revolutionised women’s fashion, breaking away from restrictive corsets and long skirts that had previously hindered their mobility. Instead, women began to adopt more practical, comfortable clothing that allowed them to cycle freely. The image of the ‘new woman’ emerged — educated, sporty, and career-oriented — with a bicycle as her constant companion. In 1895, at the age of 80, suffragist leader <keyword id="23037502" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="elizabeth-cady-stanton" source="keywords">Elizabeth Cady Stanton</keyword> predicted the power of the bicycle in transforming the lives of women. Having the ability to be self-reliant, often for the first time in their lives, would encourage them to be more courageous in other areas as well. While back then, their fight was for their right to vote in political elections, times have changed. Women have to fight different battles — some new and some old — to realise and utilise their potential. What has remained constant in this journey is the bicycle! Susan B. Anthony, another suffragist leader further opined, “Let me tell you what I think of bicycling. I think it has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world. It gives women a feeling of freedom and self-reliance. I stand and rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a wheel…the picture of free, untrammelled womanhood.” Had she known that several decades later, this simpleton mode of transport would continue to improve the lives of young women in remote parts of the Global South, she would’ve been happy to her heart's content! If something as mundane as access to mobility has historically brought such great results, what can be done to bring greater mobility for women in policy-making today? Professor Nishith Prakash suggests that mobility needs to be thought of in a broader context. Mobility in the case of women isn’t just freedom to be able to go from one place to another. There are multiple actors at play, including their actual safety and the perception of feeling safe in an environment. Cultural norms in most societies across the globe, and in India, automatically grant the power of key-decision making to men. For these archaic norms to be challenged, he suggests changes in curriculum from early childhood. Reiterating the importance of agency in making choices for themselves, there need to be jobs for them to want to step out of the confines of their homes. And once they do, nothing can stop them from cycling away to their freedoms!
