A 'legendary' 1962 Ferrari GTE used by the Rome police in high-speed car chases is now for sale — take a closer look

<p>We should be getting used to this. The 2015 Monterey Car Week wrapped up this weekend, and both the Saturday and Sunday auctions at Pebble Beach featured Ferraris bringing in big bucks.</p><p>Gooding &amp; Company handled two big multimillion-dollar sales. But it wasn't speciale - that honor goes to the newest version of Marnanello's super sports car.</p><p>The 488 Pista, which will be officially revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in March, is the successor to the 458 Speciale, a car that was an evolution of the 488's predecessor, the 458. The Pista continues a prancing horse tradition of offering customers beefier versions of the base mid-engine machine.</p><p>In the Pista's case, another 50 horsepower has been added to the twin-turbo V8 that was developed specifically for the 488 GTB. The turbo V8 was new at the time - and controversial, as the naturally aspirated V8 in the 458 was revered. But nobody was arguing with the 488's increase in power.</span></p><p><span>The Pista will make a compelling case as a weekend track car, crammed as it is with tech taken from the competition. </span></p><p><span>"Among the racing solutions adopted is the front F1-inspired S-Duct and the design of the front diffusers which feature a ramp angle that was optimized for the 488 GTE to create strong suction for increased downforce," Ferrari said in a statement. </span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5a8d79273a70382c008b46e2-2000/ferrari488pistaint1.jpg" alt="Ferrari 488 Pista" data-mce-source="Ferrari" /><p class="source"><span>Ferrari</span></p><p class="caption">The newest prancing horse.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span>"Additionally, the rear blown spoiler is higher and longer and the shape has been optimized. The final result of all these interventions is an impressive 20% increase in downforce compared to the 488 GTB."</span></p><p><span>Translation: Even with 711 ponies raging away, the Pista will remain stuck to the tarmac. The 0-62 mph time, according to Ferrari, is 2.85 seconds, and the top speed is 211 mph. Ferrari just unveiled a 711-horsepower supercar that's crammed with racing DNA

<p>The auction house was Bonhams. Numerous vintage Ferraris, along with other highly collectible cars, are being auctioned this week and into the weekend, as part of the festival of motoring known as the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.</p>
<p>Ferrari released the following statement:</p>
<blockquote class="blockquote">[T]he 1962/63 Ferrari 250 GTO, chassis number "3851GT," sold for $38,115,000 USD. This is the most ever paid for an automobile at auction, underscoring the unrivaled desirability for Ferrari in the collector car market and the continued dominance of the brand at auctions. This Ferrari 250 GTO is now, effectively, the most valuable and coveted car in the world.</blockquote>
<p>The company also noted that several other Ferrari's were auctioned by Bonhams for stupendous prices, demonstrating the the marque is now the most coveted among the world's wealthiest collectors:</p>

<p>The New York Times <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/15/automobiles/collectibles/bonhams-auctions-a-ferrari-250-gto-for-38-million-at-pebble-beach.html">pointed out</a> that "the hammer price of $34.65 million (before the buyer's premium) was a success, though it fell short of expectations by some that exceeded $50 million."</p>
<p>The seller was Fabrizio Violati, who originally acquired the 250 GT for a paltry $4,000 in 1965.</p>
<p>The auctions at Pebble Beach will continue through Saturday and Sunday, with plenty of other Ferraris coming up for bid.</p>
