Ecommerce giant Amazon is applying for the media rights to broadcast Indian Premier League (IPL). According to a news report, this move is aimed at strengthening Amazon’s footing in India.

BCCI is satisfied with the response it has been drawing so far after it announced on last Sunday the sale of the IPL rights - broadcast and digital for ten and five years respectively - to be sold individually or in a bundle for the next designated period, as per The Times Of India.

Amazon founded by Jeff Bezos which has more than a dozen global subsidiaries, is the first among interested overseas parties that has picked up the Invitation To Tender. Sources tracking developments say BCCI expects the global market to show keen interest in the digital rights of the IPL and Amazon picking the tender at the first available opportunity is an indicator of the same. "Everybody's talking about the possibility of the IPL rights battle being between Star and Sony. But our guess is there are going to be surprises in store," a source in the know of things told TOI.
