As per the report, India and China currently constitute almost half of US international student enrolment, and the combined number goes up to about half a million.

The number of students from China enrolling in US universities has also gone down, with 25% fall in undergraduate studies and 32% in graduate studies.
The survey was conducted jointly by American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, the Institute of International Education, Association of International Educators, the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) and its focus subgroup International Association for College Admission Counseling (ACAC).

The main reason behind this fall in the number of international applications could be the perception that more and more student visas are being denied by US embassies and consulates in China, India and Nepal, along with the perception that the environment in the US is now unsafe and less welcoming for foreign individuals.

The report also mentioned India's demonetisation policy and the weakness of the value of the rupee against the dollar as the reasons behind this.
